Private lessons

Private lessons

Private lessons are offered on all piano, keyboard, guitar and voice. We have found that private one on one instruction allows students to progress at their own pace and gain the best understanding of musical techniques. Students can start  private lessons as young as 5 years old. Students can start private lessons any time of year or month so there’s no need to wait to get started.  A variety of styles are taught such as pop, jazz, rock and classical. Contact the school office to see which times and days are available.

How to get the most out of Music lessons

Exam Preparation

If students wish they make take exams offered by ABRSM, the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music. To do this students would purchase exam grade music books and learn the required material. Exams are held 3 times a year in Edinburgh. Most of our students choose to learn their instrument recreationally and do not take exams. If a student does wish to take an exam our school can fully prepare them for any level of testing.

Recitals and Concerts

Students are given an opportunity to perform in several performances held over the course of the year.

Common Music Questions and Answers

Q: Do I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?

A: It is ideal if you have a piano at home, but you can start lessons by using an electric keyboard to practice on. Most of our students rent or buy small electric keyboards to practice on at home. We recommend a keyboard that has regular sized keys and a touch sensitive response. A touch sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder it will play louder and if you press a key softer it will play quieter.

Playing cello for recital

Q: Do I need a full drum set to take drum lessons?

A: No, you do not need a full drum set to start drum lessons. Students can start lessons by using a practice pad. This is a small dinner plate sized pad that typically costs £15 – £25 that is used for practicing drum rhythms.

Q: How long does it take to learn an instrument?

A: There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn an instrument. With regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.

Q: I don’t have any musical background or ability; can I still help my child practice?

A: Yes. Even if you don’t have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. By simply monitoring that they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day the student will progress.
